Sometimes, I feel like I spend more time thinking about commas than anything else -- on the planet. But Kim Manning found this amazing infographic as a helpful reminder of when and where commas really belong. (I'm going to keep it on my desktop.)
Editor's note: The first rule is factual, but in journalistic writing, many organizations do not use the Oxford comma (the one before "and" in a series). Inman also does not use the Oxford comma -- so skip the comma before the "and." (FYI: Editors tend to feel pretty strongly one way or the other. People talk about it like it's Comic Sans.)
