Now on with the lesson
Still questioning how to identify a noun. Remember that nouns answer the questions of who and what. But sometimes it's still a little sketchy, so here are a few more tips to help and a little quiz for funsies.
Here's a little tip: you can use the word THE to figure out if a word is a noun. Try any noun in this four-word sentence.
The _________ is __________.
Try flattery, sky, and under.
The flattery is creepy.
The sky is blue.
The under is small.
WAIT! under is not a noun because "the under is small" makes no sense.
The can also work as a determiner or indicator of a noun. It's sort of the yield sign that tells you to slow down and look for the noun. But the isn't there every time.
For example:
Kittens are cute.
The kittens are cute.
Sometimes the isn't next to the noun, but it shows you that the noun is soon to come.
The three small kittens are Kysa, Oscar and Bit.
The only time the "the" trick doesn't work is when proper nouns. For example, you wouldn't say,
The Mr. Inman went to the store.
You can also do the same thing with A or AN.
A tree is tall.
The tree is tall.
What's the difference? A is more general and the is talking about a specific tree.

Now it's time to apply what you have learned.
1. Which of the words in the following sentences is not a noun?
The volume is loud.
The solution is obvious.
The handy is invisible.
2. By using the as a determiner, check out the following words to see if they can be used as nouns. Put them to the test in sentences of four words.
