Other non-narrative examples | A REMINDER FROM LAST WEEK'S NEWS You also might have noticed that Inman has been working to incorporate more visual elements within posts. We want to extend this invitation to you as well. Please feel free to incorporate images, videos, graphics, etc. into your posts. The key here is that you must create or have rights to those images; they can't be stock images from other websites, you or someone from your company/partnership must create them. Here is a great example from Teresa Boardman in "The advantages of setting your office in a co-working space." She took the photo, and we were able to use it as the hero (main photo). Visual elements aren't limited to photos, videos, icons and graphics. Visual elements can also be infographics and entry points that help guide the readers. Entry points can be sub heads, bullet points and a numbered list. Typically, our readers enjoy non-narrative stories (stories told with visuals, chunks of information, lists, etc.) including how-tos, lists, infographics, Q&As, charticles (usually comparing something in a chart format; see left column) and other non-narrative story forms anyway. So I encourage you to think, as you brainstorm articles, about if your idea could be presented in story forms other than narratives. The following links will take you to examples of non-narrative stories. Also, if you have a long piece, you might begin with a bullet-point list at the top of the page that lets the reader know what he or she will learn -- the reader is more likely to wade through a long article if he or she knows the take-aways before starting. Here is an example of a story that used bullet points. The better the story presentation, the more likely the reader is to stay on the page and finish the article. The longer readers stay on the page, the more they get out of your post and the more value you provide. Readers are also more likely to stay on the page to continue the conversation -- this is just one way we can better the industry. |
