We have done a lot of talking about the Local program, but you haven't met our new editor yet. So that you can get to know him a little better, I had a little q-and-a session with him. Without further ado, here is the man behind Inman Local. Editor's note: I'm told that Thomas is the guy on the right and that he sports a beard these days. | What do you do for Inman, and how long have you been doing it? I’m the Local News Editor for Inman, and I’ve been doing it for 10 days, going on 11. I'm basically a seasoned vet. What made you want to get into journalism or more specifically real estate journalism? I got into journalism to write about sports but realized I like playing and watching games more than I liked working them. I got into real estate journalism because it’s an industry that shapes the the world we live in, and people will always be interested in how their cities are developing. What was your favorite article to write and why? My favorite article to write was an in-depth profile on former Arizona State University basketball coach Ned Wulk, who is now deceased. It was really fun to talk to his old players and hear stories about Phoenix college athletics in the 1960s, which look unimaginably different than they do today. Blasts from the past are always fun to watch, so experiencing it first-hand is really special. What do you do in your spare time? I play a lot of basketball and try to get outside as much as I can. Living in Colorado, it’s not that difficult. It’s always fun to shut out the world and binge-watch a good TV show sometimes, too. What advice do you have for aspiring writers? Read the work of others to always improve yourself. Always do a little extra research -- writing isn’t that hard when you have too much information. What advice do you have for new contributors? Figure out who you’re trying to reach with your story, and if you were reading your final work as a consumer, what questions would you have? And submit your work on time, and don’t mess with Dani! |
